Beatriz González: One Hundred Fifty Works, Everyday Images, Power, Violence, and Mourning
Barbican Art Gallery
🍃
Beatriz González has spent over six decades transforming Colombian popular imagery to denounce the silences and violence of her country. Under acidic colors and a deliberately offbeat style, this major figure in Latin American art metamorphoses ordinary news clippings into poignant political testimonies. The Barbican gathers 150 iconic works, ranging from vibrant canvases to everyday supports repurposed, such as painted furniture or tapestries. By appropriating advertising codes, González challenges our perceptions and revives collective memory with a biting irony. This major retrospective, presented from February 25th to May 10th, 2026, highlights an artist whose audacity has marked generations of contemporary creators. It’s a rare opportunity to grasp the force of a work where the aesthetics of the banal meet the depth of history.
