Hurvin Anderson
Tate Britain
đ
This exhibition presents eighty vibrant paintings by Hurvin Anderson, covering the entirety of his career and including previously unseen works. The British artist of Jamaican origin explores themes of identity, memory, and belonging through landscapes, interiors, and scenes of hairdressing salons. His paintings, characterized by rich colors and complex textures, create ambiguous spaces where figurative and abstract elements meet. Anderson draws on his childhood memories in Jamaica and his experience of the Caribbean diaspora in the United Kingdom to create works that question notions of place and cultural identity. The exhibition showcases the evolution of his artistic practice, from early works to more recent, more abstract paintings. Andersonâs paintings invite a meditative contemplation, gradually revealing their multiple layers of meaning and cultural references.
