Skate at 50
Southbank Centre
🍃
This exhibition celebrates fifty years of skate culture at the Undercroft of the Southbank Centre, one of the most iconic skateboarding spots in the world. Since 1976, this space beneath the Queen Elizabeth Hall has hosted London skateboarders, becoming a unique gathering and creative hub. The exhibition presents archival photographs, videos, historic skateboards, and testimonials that trace the history of this community. Visitors discover the evolution of skateboarding practices, styles, and aesthetics over five decades. The exhibition also pays tribute to the struggles to preserve this space threatened with disappearance. Skate at 50 is a celebration of urban culture, creativity, and the resilience of a community that transformed a brutalist architectural space into a place of life and artistic expression.
