Vilhelm Hammershøi, the Danish painter obsessed with silence, returns to the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza with an unprecedented retrospective. His gray-green interiors, marked by open doorways and veiled windows, evoke a profound melancholy and intense contemplation. Hammershøi’s work, influenced by cinema and photography, is characterized by a singular exploration of space and light. The exhibition highlights his use of the female figure, often represented from behind, symbolizing the poetry of silence and observation. This collection of over one hundred works allows one to understand the evolution of his style and his impact on the artistic movements of his time. Visitors will be able to admire iconic works such as “Interior, Young Woman Seen from behind” and “Open Doors,” witnesses to an intimate and meditative universe. The exhibition is open from February 17, 2026 to May 31, 2026.
