Caravaggio and the Masters of Light

The Caravaggio-esque chiaroscuro revolutionized painting at the turn of the 17th century, and its influence spread throughout Europe. This exhibition at the Museo Storico della Fanteria explores the world of Caravaggism through 23 paintings by 22 artists who followed the path laid out by the Lombard master. The route, structured in six thematic zones, presents works from private collections, rarely exhibited to the public. The dramatic lighting, striking contrasts between shadow and light, the raw realism of sacred and profane scenes, characterize these paintings which testify to the lasting impact of Caravaggio. The masters of light – whether Italian, French, Dutch, or Spanish – were all marked by this aesthetic revolution that forever transformed the history of Western art.
