The largest exhibition ever dedicated in Italy to Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) brings together over 200 works by the most important Japanese artist. Palazzo Bonaparte presents an exceptional journey through the entire career of the master of ukiyo-e, from his early works to his late period. The famous Great Wave of Kanagawa sits alongside lesser-known but equally fascinating series, revealing the diversity and richness of an artist who never ceased to innovate until his 90th year. The prints, paintings, and drawings testify to a meticulous observation of nature, landscapes, as well as the daily life of the Edo period. Hokusai revolutionized Japanese art and has profoundly influenced Western art, notably the Impressionists. This retrospective allows us to understand the scope of his genius and his perpetual quest for artistic perfection.
