Tragicomica. Italian Art from the Early 20th Century to Today

From April 2nd to August 30th, 2026, the MAXXI will present Tragicomica, a major exhibition analyzing Italian cultural production from post-war to the present day. Curated by Andrea Bellini and Francesco Stocchi, the exhibition explores the comic element and self-deprecation as distinctive traits of the national artistic tradition. More than 140 artists are represented, including Elena Bellantoni, Alighiero Boetti, Maurizio Cattelan, Lucio Fontana and Paola Pivi. The exhibition extends to cinema, theater, literature and philosophy, offering a deep reflection on Italian cultural identity. A public program articulated accompanies the exhibition with conferences, performances and screenings.
