Inspired by Salman Rushdie’s assertion that ‘human beings do not perceive things whole,’ Maia Ruth Lee’s “Double Vision” at Tina Kim Gallery interrogates the fragmented nature of identity through a layered exploration of migration and translation. The exhibition showcases a new body of paintings from her ongoing Bondage Baggage series alongside sculptural and video works, reflecting on the artist's parents – Bible translators who moved to Nepal – and their efforts to build a written alphabet for the Sherpa language. Lee’s practice builds an ever-expanding archive, constantly assembling, transporting, and translating experiences. Drawing inspiration from her family history and broader themes of displacement, she conditions identity within multiple histories, temporalities, and systems of knowledge. This exhibition offers a profound meditation on how we perceive the world – not as unified wholes, but through fractured, yet vital, perspectives. It’s a compelling exploration of human experience, presented with a fresh artistic voice. Free admission.
