This is the first major exhibition dedicated to the paintings by candlelight of Joseph Wright of Derby, this exceptional presentation brings together his most dramatic works exploring the effects of artificial light. Wright (1734-1797), an English painter of the Enlightenment, is famous for his candlelit nocturnal scenes where he masterfully controls chiaroscuro. The exhibition presents masterpieces such as ‘An Experiment on a Bird in a Mechanical Pump’ and ‘The Philosopher Concluding a Late Discourse on the System of the World’, where the dramatic light reveals scenes of scientific discovery and wonder. Wright uses the contrast between light and shadow to create a theatrical and mysterious atmosphere, exploring the themes of knowledge, faith, and reason. The exhibition also shows how Wright influenced British and European art. This presentation offers a unique opportunity to admire these masterful works that celebrate the transformative power of light.
