Kapwani Kiwanga invests public space with a monumental work that draws its strength from Afro-American textile traditions. The artist uses motifs of quilting patterns known as “flying geese,” formerly employed as secret codes by fugitives of the Underground Railroad to orient themselves toward freedom. This installation transforms the urban landscape into a vibrant memorial to human resilience and ingenuity. By blending symbolic geometry and historical narratives, Kiwanga offers a poignant reading of collective memory and solidarity. This creation will remain visible from March 11, 2026, to April 1, 2027, allowing passersby to confront a fundamental page in American history through a contemporary and accessible artistic lens.
