Liz Glynn: American Progress (after John Gast) - Paula Cooper Gallery
In 2026, the Paula Cooper Gallery will exhibit a key work by Liz Glynn: ‘American Progress (after John Gast)’ (2017). This sculpture, integrated into the display case, is a central piece of the “The Shape of Progress” series, which interrogates American history and founding myths. Glynn revisits the famous 19th-century illustration painting, thereby deconstructing the ideals of progress and prosperity often associated with that era. The work invites critical reflection on historical narratives and the inherent contradictions in American identity. Glynn, a contemporary artist, engages in a dialogue with classic American art while raising pertinent questions about the present. This presentation offers privileged access to a significant work from her career. The exhibition is free and open from June 25th to July 31st, 2026.
