Sam Shaw was closest to the action in 1954, when Billy Wilder directed one of the most famous scenes in the history of the seventh art: that of the white dress lifted by the subway’s breath. At Galerie de l’Instant, the photographer’s complicit lens reveals the Hollywood icon in all her vulnerability and brilliance. These striking photographs capture an almost surreal clarity, a light that continues to reach us long after the star’s disappearance.
