Max Ernst to Dorothea Tanning: Networks of Surrealism - Neue Nationalgalerie
One hundred years after the first Surrealist Manifesto, this exhibition unveils the complex networks that shaped one of the most influential artistic movements of the 20th century. Through paintings and sculptures by Leonora Carrington, Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, René Magritte, Joan Miró, and Dorothea Tanning, the journey traces the extraordinary trajectories of these works during the 1930s-1940s. The research project on the provenance of the Ulla and Heiner Pietzsch collection reveals how friendships, romantic relationships, and commercial transactions intertwined to spread surrealism around the world. The exhibition shows how the Nazi occupation forced artists and collectors into exile, to Mexico or the United States, taking or abandoning their works. These object biographies open a unique window onto the intellectual and artistic networks of a troubled era.
