Abbey of La Sauve-Maire
Abbaye de La Sauve-Majeure
🍃
Founded in 1079 by the Duke of Aquitaine and Gerard de Corbie, this Benedictine abbey housed up to 300 monks at its peak. Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela, it reveals an architectural masterpiece of the XIIth century, with its ancient sanctuary, richly sculpted arches featuring lions of Achaemenid style, and curious figures like men's phalluses or whimsical bull statues. The octagonal bell tower overlooks ruins where Roman and nascent Gothic architecture mingle: vaulting systems of ogival arches, medallions of consecration from 1231. Explore the evocative cloister, the chapter hall, and archaeological exhibitions which recreate monastic life. A leaflet-guide illuminates every detail. Open all year round today.
