Whitney Museum of American Art
Musée d'Art Américain Whitney
🍃
In 1930, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney refused the invisibility imposed on American artists. After the Metropolitan Museum rejected her collection of 500 works, this sculptor and patron created her own museum, dedicated exclusively to living American art. An act of rebellion that transformed the New York cultural landscape.
Today, the Whitney gathers more than 4,000 artists—from Edward Hopper to Jean-Michel Basquiat—and remains the only museum entirely devoted to American art. Its terraces offer spectacular views while its permanent collection and special exhibitions retrace the evolution of art from the 20th century to today.
Your visit includes complete access to collections, a free mobile guide, and public guided tours. An immersion in artistic courage and innovation that define America.
