Port Cailhau
Porte Cailhau
🧘
In 1496, the statue of Charles VIII reigns on the riverfront façade of this fortified gate, erected to celebrate his victory at Fornoue. A unique vestige of Bordeaux's ramparts, it fuses defensive medieval architecture with Renaissance sculptures to the meneaux windows and floral friezes. Climb the steep stairs to the massive oak beams for an unobstructed view of the Garonne River and the nearby bridge. Inside, models and panels revive medieval Bordeaux, from the Palais de l’Ombrière to Gascon lords. As the only open-to-the-public civil medieval monument, classified since 1883, it reveals how a simple port entrance became a royal triumphal arch. Ticket included. Open today until 2099.
