Natasja Kensmil captures the exact moment when the legends of Olympus crack in the face of the collapse of the natural world. In her oil paintings, Greek goddesses and millennial glaciers share a silent agony. At the Andriesse – Eyck Gallery, the artist employs dirty whites and deep blacks to transform the canvas into a tomb of ice and marble. This isn’t simply an ecological denunciation, but a vigil where the ancient figures seem to have renounced their eternity. Each work imposes a physical tension: up close, one observes the thick, tormented material of the brush; from afar, one feels the cold of a landscape that is evaporating. Kensmil buries old narratives in order to better confront us with the immediate nostalgia of our own climate. An intense visual experience that renders universal grief.
