In Mali, When Animals Dance. The Sonia and Albert Loeb Donation
86 quai Perrache, 69002 Lyon
On the banks of the Niger River, the Bamanan, Marka, Bozo, and Somono communities have perpetuated the sogow bò theatrical tradition for centuries – a spectacular tradition inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Musée des Confluences highlights this vibrant universe where music and singing animate striking animal masks. Drawn from the exceptional donation of Sonia and Albert Loeb, this rare collection testifies to fascinating ceremonies taking place on land or water, day or night. These sculpted creatures are not mere objects, but the protagonists of a total performance blending sacred and festive elements. This ensemble of works transports us to the heart of Malian rituals of incredible vitality. To be admired from April 3, 2026 to February 1, 2027.
