In 1938, the staircase of the Stedelijk Museum was whitewashed to symbolize modern clarity. Today, Adam Pendleton reverses this history by draping it in black, creating a magnetic center of shadow at the heart of the institution. For his first major exhibition in the Netherlands, the American artist unfolds his “Black Dada” grammar – an interweaving of letters and silhouettes that defies any simplistic reading. His Basis drawings, with gold ink on dark backgrounds, shine with the intensity of precious manuscripts. Confronting giants of abstraction like Newman or de Kooning, Pendleton rewrites the codes of art. His monumental canvases, including one six meters wide, wander across walls like urban narratives. It’s not a tribute, but a political and formal reinvention of modernity, where black serves as an engine for a vibrant and impactful expression.
