James McNeill Whistler dominated the brush with the same sharp precision that he cultivated his dandyish appearance. For this first major retrospective in the Netherlands, the Van Gogh Museum gathers a hundred works, including the iconic portrait of his mother and the ethereal “White Girls.” Far from being just a painter of mist, this Chelsea-born American transformed London into musical scores of blue and silver, prioritizing harmony to anecdote. Vincent van Gogh himself admired the nervous energy of his etchings, seeing in them a fascinating artistic kinship. Between legal battles and aesthetic provocations, Whistler imposed a radical modernity where the subject fades before pure emotion. This exceptional journey, designed with the Tate Britain, extends to the Mesdag Collection in The Hague to confront his elegance with Dutch soil.
