Susan Hiller, a pioneering figure in conceptual and multimedia art, has explored the territory of the unconscious over five decades through everyday objects, mass media, and even the internet. The exhibition “Bad Dreams” presents an extensive debut in Berlin, a city that profoundly influenced her artistic practice at the beginning of the 2000s. Hiller investigated strange phenomena, dreams, hallucinations, and altered states of consciousness, collecting “ghosts”—cultural waste, fragments, things invisible to most but intense for some. The exhibition offers a fascinating exploration of how society shapes its fears and gives form to what escapes rational explanation. It questions the limits of our perception and reveals psychic archives from objects such as toys, curiosities found on the internet, or even children’s kitchens. An audacious and previously unseen work, it invites deep reflection on the construction of our own realities.
