In 1990, Emma McIntyre, an artist born in New Zealand and based in Los Angeles, explores the boundaries of abstraction with an alchemical approach. Her upcoming exhibition at David Zwirner in New York, titled ‘This body holds / swamp stuff’, presents a collection of paintings and works on paper where she combines traditional techniques with unexpected materials such as iron oxide. McIntyre creates evolving artworks, oscillating between order and chaos, spontaneity and control, thus capturing a sense of life and transformation. The artist uses the pouring and layering process to generate complex textures and hypnotic visual effects. Her paintings are characterized by a richness of vibrant colors and palpable gestural energy, inviting the viewer to contemplate the beauty of flow and change. This exhibition is a testament to McIntyre’s commitment to exploring the infinite possibilities of painting.
