Expanding the Walls: Making Connections Between Photography, History, and Community - Studio Museum in Harlem
From July 2, 2026 to August 15, 2027, the Studio Museum of Harlem will showcase a unique collaboration between past and present photography. Seventeen young artists, part of an innovative development program, are presenting their bold creations. Their work dialogues with the timeless richness of James Van Der Zee’s photographs, an iconic figure whose images immortalized the history and life of the Harlem community. This exhibition offers a refreshing perspective on the art of the image, exploring the deep connections between photography, collective history, and identity. It is a rare opportunity to discover the vision of the next generation while revisiting the legacy of a master. A stimulating encounter between history and contemporary creation.
