In 2001, The Barnstormers painted an entire wall in Williamsburg, marking a key step in the exploration of the relationship between art and community. “How We Work: Smack Mellon at 30” is an unprecedented dive into the archives of this organization founded in 1995, revealing a legacy of support for artists based on experimentation and manual labor. The exhibition gathers works by iconic artists such as Itziar Barrio, whose recent recognition reflects Smack Mellon’s continued commitment to emerging talent, as well as collaborative projects from the Camel Collective. It explores the multiple forms of “work” – from artistic creation to production and community processes – through diverse materials and approaches. The exhibition sheds light on the often invisible labor behind art, a deep engagement with creativity and artist support that shaped Smack Mellon’s very identity. The event is free and offers an immersive exploration of 30 years of artistic innovation.
