List of No’s I Hwi Hahm

In 2024, Hwi Hahm earned his Master of Fine Arts degree at Hunter College, exploring identity dissociation through a series of abstract paintings. The exhibition “List of No’s” at JO-HS presents a radical approach: the artist progressively eliminates direct and narrative representations, focusing on fundamental elements such as color, form, and composition. This process of elimination leads to works where the viewer is invited to perceive the very essence of the pictorial support – a subtle interplay between matter and illusion. Inspired by the traditions of minimalist art and conceptual painting, Hahm is interested in how absence can generate an intense presence. The exhibition is dedicated to exploring the limits of representation and seeking a stripped-down pictorial language, where each absence tells a story. The work aims as a dialogue between the visible and invisible, matter and meaning.
