In 2006, Michael Kagan completed his master’s degree at the New York Academy of Art. The exhibition “Surface to Air” presents an entirely new series of monotype silkscreens that reinterpret the summit of K2, the second highest mountain in the world. Created in collaboration with Brand X Editions, this work explores the striking contrast between monumental representation and abstraction. Kagan deconstructs the ascent to the summit, transforming the Karakoram massif into a series of five dynamic interpretations. Each piece is marked by changing textures, vibrant colors, and an unstable interplay of forms, evoking both the solidity and fragility of the rock. The artist is interested in the limits of human experience and how perception evolves depending on distance. A work that questions our relationship to the landscape and the grandeur of nature.
