The Uterus Is Also a Fist

In 2026, Apexart in New York will present “The Uterus is also a fist,” a radical exhibition exploring the issues of reproductive justice through the eyes of 11 Latin American artists. Inspired by Angélica Freitas’ poems, the exhibition confronts the legal and social restrictions surrounding abortion in Brazil, where artistic expression is often limited. Rosa Bunchaft, Guillermina Bustos, Ludmilla Ramalho, and Liane Roditi offer a diverse range of works – sculptures, performances – that interrogate femininity and its connection to the body. This initiative, selected from 658 proposals, sheds light on the ambivalence of female experience, particularly its institutional dimensions. The exhibition is part of a broader effort to denounce injustices and celebrate marginalized voices. Renata Freitas will present a live performance, ‘I am Unfolding,’ completing this powerful and contemporary exploration. The event is free and open to all.
