Tom Lloyd

In 2026, the Studio Museum in Harlem will inaugurate its new building with an exhaustive presentation of the work of Tom Lloyd, a pioneer of art and technology. This exhibition, the result of a partnership with the Holly Peterson Foundation and the Andy Warhol Foundation, highlights his innovative work around electric light and craftsmanship, as a reaction to the expectations of the time regarding the representation of Black artists. Lloyd, a key figure of the Art Workers’ Coalition and the Store Front Museum, is rediscovered in this retrospective which explores his illuminated sculptures and found-object works. The exhibition, presented from March 11th to March 22nd, 2026, is an opportunity to see a rare selection of his creations, often unknown, and to understand the impact of his artistic and social engagement. An important presentation for the museum and a unique opportunity for the public to discover an essential artist in the history of contemporary art.
