Usha Seejarim, a South African conceptual artist, explores the notion of ‘use’ through a series of sculptures and assemblages of everyday objects. Her work, ‘Used’, presented by Southern Guild, deconstructs gender and power roles, highlighting repetitive efforts and the physical production that underlies our existence. Influenced by Sara Ahmed, Seejarim examines ‘servitude’ as a complex architecture of identity, materialized through the transformation of domestic objects. This exhibition marks the inauguration of Southern Guild’s first space in New York, offering a fresh perspective on work, heritage, and resilience. Seejarim’s work, often described as a ‘visceral meditation on labor’, is presented until May 17, 2026. A fascinating exploration of the relationship between art and everyday life.
