Since its beginnings as a printmaking student in the 1960s, Vija Celmins has cultivated a unique approach, characterized by obsessive meticulousness and an endless exploration of marine motifs. This exhibition, presented by Matthew Marks Gallery, highlights a collection of her etchings made between 1983 and 1985 – a particularly prolific and experimental period in her career. These works, often described as “landscapes of the mind,” demonstrate an exceptional mastery of technique and a capacity to translate sensations and emotions through the medium of ink. The exhibition offers a valuable insight into Celmins’ evolution, an artist whose work continues to influence generations of contemporary artists. It is free to the public from May 1st to June 27th, 2026.
