Created by Dyani White Hawk, the immersive installation “Nourish” transforms the Studio Bar at the New York Whitney Museum into a space for contemplation. Composed of thousands of handcrafted ceramic tiles, this unique work draws inspiration from Lakota traditions of beadwork, painting, and quillwork. White Hawk engages with American Modernism and Abstract Expressionism, notably through the works of Marsden Hartley and Jackson Pollock. The installation, created in 2023, utilizes colors inspired by Lakota motifs, creating subtle nuances that evoke natural gradients. “Nourish” invites reflection on the history of art and Indigenous heritage. The exhibition is free and runs from January 2024 to March 2027. It offers a unique opportunity to appreciate a site-specific artwork and the influence of Indigenous art on modern art.
