Hyundai Terrace Commission: Kelly Akashi

The California artist Kelly Akashi appropriates the fifth-floor terrace of the Whitney Museum for an ambitious installation that redefines our relationship to urban space. Presented as part of the prestigious 2026 Biennale, this artistic proposition dialogues monumental sculptures, steel reliefs, and digital animations with the New York panorama. At the center of this dispositif, the work “Monument (Altadena)” captures natural light to transform the visitor’s experience throughout the hours. Between poetry and raw materiality, Akashi uses a variety of supports, from paper to a giant screen, to create an outdoor sensory path. This major event on the contemporary scene can be seen at the Whitney Museum of American Art from March 8 to August 23, 2026.
