Eva Gonzalès. A Free Artist’s Journey

The only student of Édouard Manet, Eva Gonzalès long shone in the shadow of her contemporaries Mary Cassatt and Berthe Morisot. Yet, this indispensable figure of the 19th century had never before benefited from a retrospective of its magnitude. The Petit Palais remedies this historical oversight by highlighting the talent of a painter cut short at just 36 years old. Her intimate portraits and scenes of daily life testify to a striking sensitivity, combining a vigorous touch with great psychological finesse. This unprecedented presentation, which will subsequently join the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, underscores the boldness of a woman who imposed her vision in an artistic environment that was then very masculine. The event takes place from September 15, 2026 to January 24, 2027.
