Jean Marquis, Surveyor of Everyday Life. Photographs 1951-1983 - Galerie Roger-Viollet
In 1954, Jean Marquis joined Magnum Photos, marking a turning point in French photojournalism. The exhibition dedicated to this chronicler of everyday life, presented at the Galerie Roger-Viollet, offers an unprecedented dive into the work of a photographer who witnessed over thirty years of social and cultural transformations. From Montmartre to factories, passing through the French coasts and the scenes of the “Thirty Glorious Years,” Marquis captured with precision the daily life and challenges of his time. The presentation includes 109 contemporary prints, offered in limited editions of 30 copies, testifying to a rich and committed work. The exhibition sheds light on the talent of this little-known photographer, a member of Magnum Photos, who was able to immortalize key moments in French history with a unique perspective and particular sensitivity. A fascinating exploration of the work of an artist serving the truth.
