In February 1939, thousands of men and women crossed the Pyrenees in the cold, fleeing the dictatorship to find refuge on the beaches of southern France. The Cervantes Institute sheds light on this pivotal moment through a hundred poignant photographs. These photographs document two significant realities: the evacuation of Basque and Catalan children as early as 1937 to escape the bombs, and the mass exodus of anti-fascist Spaniards during the Retirada. After traveling throughout Europe, this exceptional exhibition, created in collaboration with the Spanish Department of Historical Memory, finally arrives in Paris. It is a raw visual testimony of welcome and survival, capturing the humanity behind the barbed wire of makeshift camps. This is a necessary event to understand the shared history that links France and Spain, and it will be accessible from December 9, 2025, to January 23, 2026.
