Jean-Baptiste Greuze embodies the turning point of the 18th century, between academicism and a new sensibility. This French painter captivated his contemporaries with scenes of everyday life filled with emotion, far from grand historical subjects. At the Petit Palais, a masterpiece of the Belle Époque built in 1900, his works dialogue with the permanent collections: Italian Renaissance, ancient sculptures, French Impressionists. The building itself is worth a visit: a majestic dome, a semicircular courtyard with colonnades, and a wrought-iron staircase of remarkable lightness. Access to the permanent collection is free, ideal for strolling through the richly decorated rooms of frescoes and mosaics. Temporary exhibitions complement this experience. A place where architecture becomes a work of art as much as the exhibited canvases.
